Visit These Natural Wonders in the Azores

By Kenya Barrett

The Azores is an astonishing collection of nine volcanic islands governed by Portugal that are situated in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands offer amazing views and are home to many of Earth’s natural wonders. Keep reading to learn about a few magnificent wonders you must experience in the Azores!

Sete Cidades Massif

Location: São Miguel Island

One of the most popular stratovolcanic complexes located on the island of Sao Miguel is the Sete Cidades Massif. Formed thousands of years ago as a result of various volcanic eruptions, the large caldera has since become home to Lagoa da Sete Cidades.

If you visit the Sete Cidades Massif today, expect to be wowed by the scenery! The area features twin turquoise lakes that are surrounded by gorgeous mountain ranges and green valleys. For an extra spectacular view, consider exploring different vantage points located at the edge of the crater or make your way down to the base of the lake for a swim. Feeling squeamish about the height? Not to worry – the village of Sete Cidades conveniently located in the southwestern region of the caldera! Feel free to explore and interact with locals.

Lagoa do Fogo

Location: São Miguel

Agua de Pau Massif is another stratovolcanic complex that serves as home to Lagoa do Fogo, one of the highest lakes on all of the island. The caldera has been recognised as a natural reserve by the local government since 1974 and formed almost 15,000 years ago!

Natural lovers will enjoy the abundance of rare and native plant species during their visit to Lagoa do Fogo. Some plants to keep an eye out for include the Azores Juniper and St. John’s wort. Those who enjoy birdwatching may also be able to spot the Azorean buzzard and the Azorean wood pigeon.

Mount Pico

Location: Pico Island

Known as the tallest mountain in Portugal, Mount Pico is quite the natural beauty to be seen. At 7,713 feet tall, this marvelous natural beauty is the perfect place to enjoy a hike. Visitors are able to safely reach the top, so long as they follow the 47 poles markers that assist hikers along their trek.

Celebrate the end of your hike at the very top of Mount Pico, basking in the outstanding views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Azores. If you’re lucky enough to have clear skies during your hike, you’ll have the opportunity to take photos of Sao Jorge and Faial Island.

Poca da Dona Beija

Location: Furnas, São Miguel Island

In addition to calderas, the Azores is also known for its abundance of geothermal pools. Head to the village of Furnas to experience the iconic Poca da Dona Beija. Visitors of this natural wonder can enjoy a calming soak in one of the hot pools of Sao Miguel Island. There are several pools in the area – so if one is a bit too hot, simply hop into a cooler one!

The best part about these naturally occurring spas is that they offer free spa materials for your personal use. Visitors can treat themselves to a free clay mask by scraping the natural clay off of the corner of the pool's walls. These minerals are readily available and leave your skin feeling refreshed like never before!

Algar do Carvo

Location: Terceira Island

One of the most interesting wonders in all of the Azores is located right on Terceira Island. Algar do Carvo is a cavern that sits in the center of the isle. Essentially a deep underground cave, this natural wonder formed thousands of years ago ago as a result of the Guilherme Moniz volcano. Today, visitors can descend into the cave to experience the crystal clear lagoon as well as the main chamber.

What makes this cave even more amazing is the presence of stalactite minerals! These naturally occurring formations sparkle when graced with beams of sunlight, which light up the insides of the caves. If you’re lucky, you might spot a few plant and animal species including springtails and moss!
