Mykonos is the perfect island escape, just waiting to be explored. With its pristine beaches, vibrant sunsets, and buzzing nightlife, there’s so much to enjoy – though the Greek islands can be on the pricey side.
Thankfully, Mykonos offers plenty to see and do without spending a penny! Here are our top ten favourite free experiences across the island.
1. Get lost in town
Whether intentional or not, you’re bound to get a little lost in Mykonos Town! Its winding alleyways, iconic whitewashed buildings, bright blue doors, and cheerful blooms cascading from pots make for a charming detour on your way to the coast.
2. Soak up the sun at Paradise Beach
Returning from Mykonos without a golden Mediterranean tan? Simply unheard of! Set aside time for one of the finest holiday activities: basking on the beach with no agenda other than pure relaxation.
3. Snap a selfie with Peter the Pelican
The original Peter (or Petros, as he’s known locally) was rescued by a fisherman in 1950. Since then, three pelicans named Peter call the harbour home, now iconic mascots of the town.
4. Stroll through Rarity Gallery
This free art gallery in town, Rarity Gallery, offers a unique collection of intriguing artwork. Established in 1994, the gallery features five rooms, each with its own theme, and the knowledgeable staff will make your visit all the more memorable.
5. See the iconic windmills
The seven famous windmills above the port are symbols of Mykonos and can be spotted from nearly every corner of town. Originally built to mill grain, these windmills are a must-see (and a perfect place to watch the sunset!).
6. Discover Ano Mera
History enthusiasts will love a trip four miles east of Chora to Ano Mera, home to the 18th-century Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, known for its marble sculptures and grand altar screen. Continue half a mile further to the 12th-century Monastery of Paleokastro, one of the island’s lushest locations.
7. Visit Paraportiani Church
A landmark of the island, Paraportiani Church is essential viewing while you’re here. Dating back to the Byzantine era, this iconic whitewashed church sits high on the coast, offering incredible views of the Aegean.
8. Explore the Mykonos Folklore Museum
Step into Mykonos’ past with Cycladic costumes, traditional instruments, historical paintings, and vintage photographs. The museum spans three historical buildings, including Lena’s House, an 18th-century home left exactly as its last resident arranged it, and the Agricultural Museum near the Windmills, which highlights Mykonos’ farming history.
9. Catch the sunset in Little Venice
Little Venice is a picturesque spot to wander, take photos, and soak up the island’s atmosphere. For the ultimate experience, head here at sunset to watch the light paint the buildings in rich colours as the day fades.
10. Window shop on Matoyianni Street
Matoyianni Street is a paradise for shoppers, but even if you’re on a budget, there’s no reason to skip it! Enjoy exploring designer boutiques, handmade jewellery shops, and souvenir stalls. Whether or not this one stays a “free activity” is entirely up to you!
